Cellular Automata (CAs for short) are visible computations which take the
form of realtime self-generating graphics movies. The most important
near term CA applications are image processing and image generation.
CAs are fun to look at, and they alter images in interesting ways.
CAs can be used to simulate processes as diverse as: turbulence,
heat flow, the mixing of gasses, the spread of disease, predator-prey
ecologies, erosion, and crystallization. CAs are important for physics,
chemistry, biology, computer science, and the new discipline of
artificial life.
CAs are fully parallel computations. In a CA computation, the screen is
broken up into small cells which behave like independent, synchronized
processors. Each of the cells performs the same computation over and over,
basing its successive states on the states of its nearest neighbors.
The Autodesk Cellular Automata Laboratory looses your creativity in a
virtually infinite domain, where your discoveries may be not just
interesting or rewarding, but may create a whole new world.
